Managing the Ship: Navigating Clients Through Critical Governance Matters

The attorneys in our Education Practice advise clients on day-to-day and complex governance matters affecting their institutions.  We work with a full range of education clients, from small private colleges to large public universities to for-profit educational institutions.  Our lawyers leverage extensive backgrounds in the public and private sectors to help our clients navigate complicated governance matters which are heavily regulated by federal and state governmental authorities, as well as national and regional accrediting bodies.

At HMBR, we understand the difficult internal and external challenges our education clients face as they strive to effectively manage their institutions.  We work with schools to develop and implement governance models that comply with applicable accrediting standards and other regulatory demands.  We participate in board meetings to help assure proper procedures are followed.  We also review and revise bylaws and other institutional documents to guide clients in implementing policies, promoting effective operations and complying with changing laws, regulations and accrediting standards.  Our lawyers are regularly called upon to help institutional leaders diffuse and resolve the controversies that often surface among diverse stakeholders as these leaders attempt to move their educational institutions forward in a positive direction.

No matter the institution, the attorneys in our Education Practice understand how accrediting bodies and other regulators expect schools to be governed and how they want decisions to be made.  Cognizant of the fact that when one authority takes action against an institution other regulators are likely to follow, we help clients implement proactive and preventative measures that help avoid these types of investigations and remedial actions.
